Tech Neck

Diagram showing the weight of neck strain

Today’s technology is a gift and a curse. We have so much information and entertainment right in the palm of our hands it’s become almost impossible to put our phones down. How is all this phone time added to our daily lives affecting modern society? Well, it’s causing kyphosis to set in earlier.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, think about an elderly person you’ve seen hunched over so badly that it was almost, or maybe even, impossible to stand up straight. That’s kyphosis. Now, think about your daily routines. When you drive to work, sit in front of the computer, read, write, eat, walk your dog, play with your kids. These activities all take place in the front of our bodies (aka sagittal plane).

Our day to day lives are already so front heavy, so adding hours of scrolling doesn’t make it any better. Which means you should be doing exercises to strengthen your core and posterior chain. If not, your back & core muscles become weak. Pecs & shoulders become short. Tightness from overuse and kyphosis starts setting in sooner than it should. A proper fitness regimen can help balance out your body’s daily activities and increase your posture.

Here are a few exercises that you should include in your fitness regime:

  • Romanian Deadlifts

  • Hip Thrusts

  • Seated Cable Rows

  • Face Pulls

  • Plank

  • Hanging Knee Raises
